Why do we save clothes ‘for best’?
Why do we do that? I’m certainly guilty of it. In the past I’ve bought the children something lovely, felt that familiar excitement opening the package, looked at it, felt it, tried it on them and gushed over how wonderful it was. Then I’d put it in their wardrobe ‘for best’. This might be a special occasion or family party that was weeks or even months away. That is all very well and good and it is certainly a lovely feeling to see something brand new and fresh to wear for a particular event but it is one day, by the time that day is over that outfit might not get a chance to be worn again.
I’ll never forget a gorgeous, classic dress I bought my daughter for Christmas day, I bought it earlier in the year and saved it. She wore it for a couple of hours before I took it off her incase the turkey and trimmings were spilt over it. After dinner she never put it back on, I felt cheated! This actually made me change the way I buy clothes for her and has been instrumental to how I designed my first collection.
Beautiful, classic clothes, for everyday wear.
I wanted to ensure that my clothes were beautiful to look at, enough to give you that first excited feeling when you open the package, but also practical and affordable enough that they can be enjoyed every day. Once I’d adopted this mentality I changed the way I dressed my daughter – she now wears her Cecilia Belle dresses for ‘Messy Play’ class (covered by an apron of course!) for outings to the park or forest (who said welly boots do not ‘go’ with a party dress?!) and simply when she’s hanging out with Mummy.
This means that we are not saving them for best, they are not purely sitting in the wardrobe waiting for their big unveiling, they are being worn, enjoyed and complimented on. I love having people stop me on the school run and say how well dressed she is – and why shouldn’t she be? Life is for living, clothes are for wearing!
Now I just need to adopt the same approach to myself and step away from the comfy tracksuit and mum bun!!
